Recirculation Services in San Jose

For homes with a dedicated hot water return line and for homes without one.

  • Demand recirculation pumps

A pump at the water heater that runs only when you ask for hot water, with push buttons or other controls at the fixtures.

  • Systems for homes without a return line

A pump and a crossover valve that send cooled water in the hot line back through the cold line, with no new piping through the walls.

  • Return lines and loops

A dedicated hot water return line, often added during a repipe or remodel, for the fastest hot water and the quietest system.

  • Tankless recirculation

Recirculation set up on tankless water heaters, using the unit's built-in pump or an external pump the maker approves.

  • Pump repair and replacement

Noisy, leaking or dead pumps replaced, and timer pumps changed to demand controls.

  • Hot water pipe insulation

Insulation on accessible hot water pipes, which California's Energy Code calls for when water heating systems are altered.

Signs a Recirculation Pump Would Help

Most homes with a long wait for hot water are good candidates.

  • A long wait for hot water

Bathrooms or a kitchen far from the water heater take a long time to run hot.

  • Lots of water down the drain

Cold water you run while waiting for hot is water and money wasted.

  • An old pump that runs all the time

Continuous or timer-only pumps waste energy and keep the water heater working.

  • Your pump stopped working

Hot water takes as long as it did before the pump, or the pump hums, leaks or rattles.

  • You're replacing the water heater or repiping

The best time to add a return line or set up recirculation on the new heater.

A hot water recirculation pump moves hot water toward your faucets before you open them, so you don’t run cold water down the drain while you wait. Under California’s 2025 Energy Code, a recirculation system serving a single home must be a demand system with manual on and off controls. CPI Service installs and repairs recirculation pumps on tank and tankless water heaters in San Jose and the South Bay, quoted as a fixed price before we start. Call (408) 978-3093.

How Does a Hot Water Recirculation Pump Work?

Hot water sitting in the pipes cools between uses, so the first water out of a far faucet is cold. A recirculation pump moves that cooled water back toward the water heater and pulls hot water up to the fixture. With demand controls, the pump runs only when you press a button or otherwise ask for hot water, then shuts off once hot water reaches the far end of the line.

Recirculation Options at a Glance (October 2026)

System How it works Best for Meets the 2025 Energy Code?
Demand pump on a return line Pump at the water heater moves water around a dedicated loop when you ask for it Homes with a return line, or a repipe or remodel adding one Yes, with manual on and off controls
Under-sink (crossover) system Cooled water in the hot line returns through the cold line via a valve under the far sink Existing homes with no return line Yes, with manual on and off controls
Tankless with recirculation The tankless unit’s built-in pump, or an approved external pump, drives the loop Tankless water heaters Yes, with demand controls
Continuous or timer-only pump Runs all the time or on a schedule Older installs No, for a single home

What Does California’s Energy Code Require?

When a water heating system or its components are added or replaced in an existing home, the 2025 Energy Code’s alteration rules apply (section 150.2(b)1H). For recirculation serving a single dwelling, the system must use demand recirculation with manual on and off controls. The same rules call for accessible hot water pipes to be insulated. We install systems that meet both.

Is a Recirculation Pump Worth It?

For a home where hot water takes a long time to reach the bathrooms or kitchen, usually yes. You stop running water down the drain while you wait, and with demand controls the pump runs only when someone wants hot water. EPA WaterSense notes that a demand-initiated recirculation line, designed properly, can be the most water-efficient way to deliver hot water, though it can cost more to install and takes a little getting used to.

Recirculation With Tankless and Heat Pump Water Heaters

Tankless water heaters heat water only when it flows, so recirculation has to match the unit: some models have a built-in pump and recirculation settings, and others work with an external pump. Our technicians hold Noritz Level 3 tankless certification. If you’re replacing a gas water heater with a heat pump water heater, plan recirculation at the same time so the pump, controls and piping suit the new heater.

How Much Does a Hot Water Recirculation Pump Cost in San Jose?

Recirculation pump installation is quoted as a fixed price before we start, after we see your water heater, the piping and the fixtures you want served. The price depends mostly on whether your home already has a return line.

Typical hot water recirculation pumps prices in San Jose, installed, in US dollars. Checked October 2026.
ServiceTypical San Jose price (USD)
Recirculation pump, installed$300–$1,500
Inspection feeWaived for service plan members$59

What affects the price

  • Return line or not. A home with a return line needs only a pump and controls; without one, an under-sink system or a new line is needed.
  • Distance and access. Long runs, slab floors, attics and crawlspaces change how the pipe can be routed.
  • Controls. Push buttons or other demand controls at the bathrooms and kitchen.
  • Power. The pump needs an outlet nearby; adding one is extra.
  • Water heater type. Some tankless units have a built-in pump; others need an external pump and setup.
  • Pipe insulation. Accessible hot water pipes insulated as the Energy Code requires.

Most repairs are quoted as a fixed price before we start. Ranges are typical for San Jose and the South Bay and don't include current specials.

How Our Recirculation Pump Installation Works

  1. Look at the system

We check the water heater, how the hot water piping runs, whether there's a return line, and where the long waits are.

  2. Recommend the right setup

A pump on a return line, an under-sink system, or recirculation on your tankless unit.

  3. Written fixed price

You get the price before any work.

  4. Install

Pump, valves and demand controls installed, with check valves and isolation valves where the maker requires.

  5. Insulate and test

Accessible hot water pipes insulated, then we time how fast hot water reaches each fixture.

  6. Show you how it works

How to use the controls, and what to check if hot water slows down again.

Hot Water Recirculation in San Jose

What to know before adding recirculation in a South Bay home.

  • California's Energy Code

Under the 2025 Energy Code, a recirculation system serving a single home must use demand recirculation with manual on and off controls. Continuous and timer-only pumps don't qualify.

  • Slab-floor homes

Many South Bay homes have pipes in or under the slab, where a new return line is hard to add. An under-sink system or a loop added during a repipe avoids opening floors.

  • Replacing a gas water heater

With the Air District's zero-NOx rules ahead, many owners are planning a heat pump or tankless replacement. Plan recirculation with it; see our zero-NOx rules guide.

  • Tankless know-how

Our technicians hold Noritz Level 3 tankless certification, and we set up recirculation to the unit maker's instructions.

  • We hired CPI for a complete house repipe and an addition of a water recirculation system. They did an excellent job. The workers were friendly, they cleaned up after themselves, they didn’t hesitate to ask if they had any questions and we were assigned a project manager to ensure that the job went smoothly. They handled permits and inspections very well. Everything went smoothly. They were definitely worth the money. I wish all of our home improvement jobs had gone this well. I definitely recommend them.

  • Antonio did an excellent job fixing the water heater room noise issue. He took the time to properly diagnose the root cause instead of just treating the symptoms, which I really appreciated.

He went through multiple steps to resolve it, including draining and cleaning the water heater and adding vibration pads between the water pipes and the wall to reduce the noise transmission.

He was professional, thorough, and clearly knows what he’s doing. Highly recommend Antonio if you’re dealing with similar issues.

  • CPI and Alex were extremely helpful when our local church’s water heater kept malfunctioning and needed replacing. From the initial diagnosis, explanation and recommendation of replacement, we always felt that our needs were being tailored to. Not only were they extremely kind, knowledgeable and professional, but they also were diligent and efficient during their time.

We’re truly grateful for their excellent work and would highly recommend CPI to anyone in need of plumbing or heating services, especially for those in larger community buildings like churches like ours.

Hot Water Recirculation Pumps FAQs

What is a hot water recirculation pump?

A pump that moves water through your hot water pipes back toward the water heater, so hot water is already near the faucet when you open it. You wait less, and less cold water goes down the drain.

Do I need a return line for a recirculation pump?

No. Homes without one can use a system that sends cooled water back through the cold line through a crossover valve under a far sink. A dedicated return line works best and is easiest to add during a repipe or remodel.

Does California require a certain kind of recirculation pump?

Yes. Under the 2025 California Energy Code, a recirculation system serving a single home, new or replaced, must use demand recirculation with manual on and off controls, such as a push button. Pumps that run all the time or only on a timer don't qualify.

Can I add recirculation to a tankless water heater?

Usually. Some tankless models have a built-in recirculation pump, and others work with an external pump. The setup has to follow the unit maker's instructions.

Does a recirculation pump save water?

It cuts the water you run while waiting for hot water. EPA WaterSense says a properly designed demand-initiated recirculation line can be the most water-efficient way to deliver hot water.

How much does a recirculation pump cost?

We quote it as a fixed price before we start, after we see the water heater, the piping and the fixtures you want served. It depends mostly on whether your home already has a return line.

Will the cold water tap run warm?

With an under-sink crossover system, the cold tap at that sink can run lukewarm for a moment after the pump runs. A dedicated return line avoids it.
