Is a Heat Pump Water Heater Right for You?
Heat pump water heaters fit most San Jose homes. These are the situations where they shine.
Get a free estimate- Your water heater is over 10 years old
Planning the switch before your old heater fails gives you time to arrange the electrical work.
- The heater is in a garage
A garage gives plenty of air and space, and a mild San Jose climate keeps efficiency high most of the year.
- You want lower energy bills
Heat pump models use much less electricity than standard electric resistance tanks.
- You're going all-electric
Pairing with solar or a heat pump HVAC system, or moving off gas entirely.
- You're planning for the Air District rule
New small gas tank heaters are set to be phased out in favor of zero-emission models.
- Check first if space is tight
Units are taller than standard tanks and need clearance and airflow; we confirm the fit before you buy.
How a Heat Pump Water Heater Works
A heat pump water heater works like a refrigerator in reverse. A fan draws room air across a coil filled with refrigerant; the refrigerant absorbs heat from the air, a compressor concentrates it, and a second coil wrapped around the tank transfers it to the water. Because it moves heat instead of making it, it needs far less electricity than electric elements alone. Backup elements take over when demand is high.
Most models have several modes: heat pump only for the lowest bills, hybrid for a balance of savings and recovery, high demand for guests, and vacation to save energy while you’re away.
What to Plan For
- Space and clearance. Units are taller than standard tanks and need room around the top for airflow and service.
- Air volume. Manufacturers specify a minimum room size or ducting; garages usually qualify easily.
- Condensate. The heat pump produces water that must drain to a suitable location, or be pumped.
- Electrical. A dedicated 240-volt circuit for most models, or a 120-volt model that plugs in.
- Noise. About like a dehumidifier; keep it away from bedrooms.
Heat Pump vs. Gas and Tankless
| Heat pump | Gas tank | Gas tankless | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Installed in San Jose | $2,500–$6,000+ | $1,500–$4,500+ | $1,800–$6,000+ |
| Running cost | Lowest | Moderate | Moderate |
| Combustion and venting | None | Flue required | Vent and larger gas line |
| Rebates | Often available | Rarely | Rarely |
| Air District rule | Compliant | New small tanks phasing out | Rules expected later |
If you’re replacing a water heater in the next few years, a heat pump model is worth pricing alongside a like-for-like replacement. We’ll give you both numbers.

Our new heat pump system has just been installed and we are very pleased with CPI and the new equipment. We are especially grateful for the knowledgeable and hard-working technician Bunhak, who worked throughout our recent heatwave to finish the job. We would highly recommend CPI for any HVAC installation or maintenance.

Antonio did an excellent job fixing the water heater room noise issue. He took the time to properly diagnose the root cause instead of just treating the symptoms, which I really appreciated.
He went through multiple steps to resolve it, including draining and cleaning the water heater and adding vibration pads between the water pipes and the wall to reduce the noise transmission.
He was professional, thorough, and clearly knows what he’s doing. Highly recommend Antonio if you’re dealing with similar issues.

Great, reliable, and timely service at a reasonable price. I shopped around quite a bit before landing on CPI. Their rates were competitive, they responded promptly, and their plumber fixed a few issues quickly and without much fuss. I’ll definitely be calling them again the next time we have issues!

Heat Pump Water Heater Installation FAQs
What is a hybrid water heater?
A hybrid or heat pump water heater is an electric tank water heater with a small heat pump on top. The heat pump moves heat from the surrounding air into the water, with backup electric elements for high demand.
How much can a heat pump water heater save?
Heat pump water heaters typically use well under half the electricity of a standard electric tank. Savings compared with gas depend on your gas and electric rates.
Do I need a new electrical circuit?
Most models need a 240-volt, 30-amp circuit. Newer 120-volt plug-in models can use an existing outlet in some homes.
Are heat pump water heaters noisy?
They make a fan and compressor sound similar to a dehumidifier, which is why garages and utility rooms are ideal locations.
Will it cool my garage?
Slightly. It pulls heat from the air, which can be welcome in summer. In a closet, it needs enough air volume or ducting to work well.
Are there rebates in San Jose?
San José Clean Energy offers rebates on qualifying models that replace a gas water heater through its EcoHome Rebate, and nearby cities have their own programs. Check current terms before you buy; we provide the paperwork.
